The Simkins Family Christmas Drop In

A Tradition of Outreach and Hospitality

Welcome to our family's story behind the annual Christmas Drop In! What began as a simple response to a pastoral challenge has blossomed into a cherished tradition that fosters community, connection, and the spirit of the season. Below, I'll share the history, the inspiration rooted in Scripture, and what you can expect if you're joining us this year. As we prepare to host again, we're excited to open our home and hearts once more.

The Origins: A Challenge from Pastor Fred Garber

The Simkins Family Christmas Drop In traces its roots back to the early 2000s, sparked by a heartfelt challenge from Pastor Fred Garber to his congregation. Pastor Fred urged us to step out of our comfort zones and actively engage with our neighbors, emphasizing that Christ has commissioned us all for outreach. He pointed out how society had become increasingly isolated, with many of us, including myself, not truly knowing those living right next door. I was guilty of this too: a quick "hello" to the immediate neighbors was about as far as my interactions went. I'd settled into a comfortable bubble, resistant to expanding it.

This challenge resonated deeply when Pastor Fred suggested using our God-given strengths to build relationships. One of my giftings is hospitality, and after praying about it, the idea of a casual Christmas Drop In came to mind. That first event in the early 2000s was a revelation—a blessing where families connected, old friends reunited in our living room after years apart, and new neighbors bonded beyond mere waves. Guests raved about the variety of cookies, sweets, and heartier foods, but the real joy was in the conversations and connections formed.

Scriptural Foundation: Why Outreach to Neighbors Matters

Pastor Fred's call wasn't just practical advice; it echoed the biblical mandate for loving and reaching out to those around us. Jesus Himself commanded us in Matthew 22:39 to "love your neighbor as yourself," making it clear that our closest mission field starts at home—literally, with the people next door. This aligns with the Great Commission in Matthew 28:19-20, where Christ instructs us to "go and make disciples of all nations," beginning with everyday interactions that reflect His love.

In a world pulling us inward, Scripture reminds us of the importance of breaking barriers. As Proverbs 18:1 warns, "Whoever isolates himself seeks his own desire; he breaks out against all sound judgment." Pastor Fred's challenge encouraged us to counteract this isolation, fostering the kind of community seen in the early church: "They devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer" (Acts 2:42). Our Drop In embodies this by creating spaces for food and meaningful encounters.

Continuing the Tradition Through Challenges

We hosted the event every year without fail until COVID made large gatherings difficult. The pause left me reluctant to restart, as the world felt even more divided. Yet, Pastor Fred's words kept echoing: How are we connecting with our neighbors today? This conviction, grounded in Scripture's call to good works (Galatians 6:9—"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up"), inspired us to revive the Drop In.

This year, Susan and I are thrilled to host again, with our daughter Brittany and son Matthew stepping up to help lead. We're expanding the offerings with themed food stations scattered throughout the house, ensuring there's something for everyone. It's a family effort now, reflecting the biblical value of generational faithfulness in Psalm 145:4: "One generation commends your works to another; they tell of your mighty acts."

The Heart of Hospitality in Scripture

At its core, our Drop In is about hospitality—a gift the Bible celebrates as a way to honor God and serve others. Romans 12:13 encourages us to "share with the Lord's people who are in need. Practice hospitality." Even more intriguingly, Hebrews 13:2 reminds us: "Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it." We've seen this play out in unexpected reunions and new friendships, turning our home into a hub of warmth during the holidays.

What to Expect: A Warm Welcome Awaits

If this is your first time attending, here's a quick guide to make your visit smooth. Drive up our long driveway, lined with pine trees on your left. Park in the grass to the right of the driveway or in the field on your left. We may have youth volunteers guiding you. Approach the house: the front door is on the left, or use the ramp on the right if needed. (Note: You'll see a black door as you get closer, but that's not the entrance!)

Once inside, we'll greet you warmly and provide plenty of space for coats. Food will be stationed throughout the first floor, with different themes in each room, from sweets and cookies to meatier options. You don't need to bring anything—we've never run out! However, if you'd like to contribute to a good cause, we'll have an opportunity to support the Elizabethtown Mennonite Church Youth Fund. Giving during the season honors 2 Corinthians 9:7: "Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."

We're looking forward to seeing familiar faces and meeting new ones. This Drop In isn't just an event, it's a living expression of faith, community, and the joy of Christmas. If you have questions, feel free to reach out. Merry Christmas!
